Our Honest Family Review — 4 Nights by the Red Sea

A little piece of white-and-blue paradise on the Red Sea — but is Tanoak Hotel really worth it for families?

We spent 4 nights at Tanoak Hotel in Ain Sokhna with two adults and two children. We booked a Superior Family Suite with Half Board and paid 772 USD in total.

This is not a sponsored review. We want to share our experience honestly — including the things we loved and the things we think could be improved.

First Impression

Before even reaching the hotel itself, one thing stood out: Tanoak is located inside a beautifully structured holiday-home development.

The surroundings are quiet, organized and pleasant.

When we arrived at the hotel, the first thing that caught my attention was the white architecture and bright color palette. Personally, I love white and light tones, and I immediately found the atmosphere calming.

The lobby itself isn’t particularly large, but there is enough comfortable seating and the atmosphere feels welcoming.

The staff at the entrance were very friendly. Reception, however, was more of a mixed experience. They were trying to help, but compared with the otherwise friendly service throughout the hotel, reception was definitely not the strongest part of our stay.

Our Superior Family Suite

Our family suite consisted of:

* Two bedrooms

* One bathroom

* A sitting area

* A large terrace/balcony

* One king-size bed

* Two single beds

The overall design is bright and modern, with beautiful lighting that makes the room feel surprisingly cozy.

The beds were very comfortable, the bedding was clean, Wi-Fi worked well, the air conditioning worked very well, and there were enough power outlets.

We also liked the little cozy corner next to the beds.

Cleanliness

The room was clean when we arrived, although there was one noticeable issue: the floor was dusty.

Because the flooring is very light, even small amounts of dust are immediately visible.

The bathroom was clean and had a shower cabin. However, if we’re being completely honest, we’d describe it as:

Clean by Egyptian standards — but not “German-level” meticulous.

During our stay, housekeeping came while we were having breakfast. When we returned, the room had been cleaned and tidied, so our overall housekeeping experience was positive.

Is the Family Suite actually family-friendly?

This is one area where we think Tanoak could improve the room concept.

The layout of the Family Suite isn’t ideal for families with very young children.

The double bed is in the back room, while the two single beds are in the room closer to the entrance, bathroom and balcony.

For families with small children, we personally didn’t feel comfortable having the children sleep in the outer room.

Unfortunately, the beds are built in and cannot simply be moved around.

So while the suite itself is spacious and comfortable, the layout isn’t the most practical for families with young children.

The balcony, on the other hand, is large, clean and child-safe, with seating available.

The Beach

Tanoak has its own designated beach area.

It’s clean and there are enough sun loungers and umbrellas. Beach towels are available, and the beach staff were friendly and helpful.

There is also a beach bar offering drinks and food, and we had a good experience with the service.

The beach itself isn’t particularly large.

One thing families should know: there are quite a lot of small stones directly at the waterline. Walking barefoot into the shallow water wasn’t particularly comfortable for us. You need to go a little further into the water before you can comfortably place your feet.

The water itself was:

warm • calm • clear • deep blue

The calmness is typical of the Red Sea, but it definitely makes the beach pleasant for families.

One funny observation: there were a lot of ravens/crows around the beach. At one point, we joked that it looked like a scene from Game of Thrones — as if they had come for the baby. 😂

Because the hotel was fully booked during our stay, the beach was lively rather than peaceful and secluded.

Getting to the Beach

There is a shuttle/golf cart service between the hotel and beach.

The problem for us was the schedule.

The shuttle only operates at certain times. With young children, that isn’t always practical. Kids can suddenly become tired, hungry or simply decide that they want to leave.

Walking to the beach isn’t particularly convenient either.

We therefore used our car.

The good news: by car, the beach is less than five minutes away.

For us, having a car made getting around much easier.

Pools & Hotel Facilities

There are two main pools at the hotel.

One is larger and deeper, while the other is somewhat smaller.

We really liked the pool area. The pools were clean and well maintained, and there are even seating areas directly in the water.

There is also a pool bar serving drinks and shisha.

For families, it’s worth mentioning that there is no separate children’s pool and we didn’t find a dedicated playground.

There is, however, children’s entertainment, including activities such as painting.

In the evening, the pool area becomes particularly beautiful. The lighting creates a very cozy atmosphere.

The Food — One of Our Highlights

This was honestly one of the biggest surprises of our stay.

We have stayed in many hotels in Egypt, including some large international chains, and we can genuinely say:

The food at Tanoak is among the best hotel food we’ve had in Egypt.

We booked Half Board, and dinner has been a real highlight.

Breakfast is also very good, with a large variety of Egyptian and international options.

Our favourites included:

🥚 Delicious eggs

🥐 Fresh, perfectly baked croissants

🍊 Freshly squeezed orange juice

☕ Tasty coffee — and importantly, the coffee is included and actually tastes good!

The bread was more average, but overall the breakfast selection was excellent.

The tables were cleared quickly and the breakfast team was friendly and attentive.

The Service

One of the things that has made our stay pleasant is the friendliness of most of the staff.

Restaurant: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Very friendly and attentive.

Beach: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Friendly and helpful.

Housekeeping: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Good experience so far.

Reception: ⭐⭐⭐

This is where we felt the hotel could improve.

Overall, however, the staff are very child-friendly, which is something we really appreciate when travelling as a family.

One Important Issue: Our Booked Benefits

There is one point we don’t want to leave out.

When booking directly through the hotel’s website, our reservation included several special added values, including:

* Early check-in / late check-out, subject to availability

* VIP amenities on arrival

* A 5 USD spa voucher

* 15% discount at Felucca & Nasaya Seafood Restaurant

* 10% laundry discount

* One breakfast in the room

We contacted the hotel before our arrival specifically to ask about these benefits.

Unfortunately, we were told that they would not be honoured.

We also asked again at reception after arrival, and received the same answer.

For us, this was disappointing, especially because these benefits were clearly part of the booking offer.

Do You Need a Car?

In our opinion: yes, if you want flexibility.

The development has some facilities, including a supermarket, football pitch and tennis court.

But without a car, your options are more limited.

Since many of the activities advertised online for Ain Sokhna seem to start from Cairo rather than directly from the hotel area, having your own car gives you considerably more freedom.

For our family, the car has made the location much easier to manage.

Was It Worth the Price?

We paid:

772 USD for 4 nights

2 adults + 2 children | Superior Family Suite | Half Board

That’s approximately 193 USD per night for the entire family.

Considering the quality of the food, cleanliness of the hotel, comfortable beds, pools and generally friendly staff, we feel the stay offers good value for a short family escape.

However, the room layout, beach size, fixed shuttle times and the issue with the advertised booking benefits are things we would definitely consider before booking again.

Would We Come Back?

Yes, we would.

For us, the biggest reasons are simple:

The food.

The cleanliness.

The friendly staff.

The comfortable atmosphere.

The sea and beach are perfectly fine, but the beach wouldn’t be the main reason we’d return.

We would especially recommend Tanoak for families or couples who are spending most of their trip in Cairo and want to add a few relaxing Red Sea days without travelling too far.

For a dedicated pure beach holiday, we’d probably look at other options as well.

We still have more of the stay ahead of us, so this is not yet our final verdict. We’ll continue observing the service, activities, evening atmosphere and everything else before giving Tanoak our final rating.
